Now, it’s been announced that more than $1 million in prize money will be given away in the next year, courtesy of the firm, a joint venture between Branson and Canadian startup WorldGaming.com.

“The video game market is extremely competitive and overcrowded, but we see a big opportunity,” Branson told Game Industry TV, explaining his decision to enter the skill-based gaming business rather than publish software for PC, console or mobile platforms.

Virgin Group is getting into the Internet video game tournament business, which is legal in all but 11 states because the video games are considered games of skill, not chance.

The new Virgin Gaming Web site, to be announced on Tuesday at the E3 video game industry show here, gives console video game players the chance to win large cash prizes for beating others at well-known PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games like Halo 3 and FIFA 10.

Visitors to Virgin can play free, or wager as little as $1. But if they bet, the winner receives twice the bet, minus Virgin’s commission.

To deter cheating, Virgin Gaming will determine the winner of each game automatically. The company has agreements with multiple game publishers to gain direct access to game results stored on the publishers’ servers.

BringIt is another online destination where console gamers from around the globe can play video games for real money. Gamers compete in head-to-head challenges and multiplayer bracket style tournaments, and win real cash. As usual, the games that are being played for cash prizes on BringIt are considered “Games of Skill” and not games of chance, and are allowed by the law.

Players can ‘BringIt’ for as little as $1 or up to as much as $100,000, so both casual players and those who crave the adrenaline of high stakes can engage at their own pace and be assured their BringIt challenge experience is safe and secure. During gameplay, the collective entry fees are held in an escrow account until the winner is declared and verified, at which point the funds are released to the winner’s secure account, minus the BringIt service fee. BringIt provides neutral arbitration as well as a self-regulating player feedback system that lets members know an opponent’s standing in advance of initiating a challenge or accepting a match.

CrunchGear offers the following feedback about BringIt:

Once registered for the site (free) you pay up a little into the account (they’ll match up to $20 for the beta) and go get your wager on, assuming you’re 18 or older. BringIt supports every major console out there along with PCs, although it seems it only works with one on one matches at the moment. That actually leaves out quite a lot of the gaming community — Counter-Strike, for instance, is a huge segment and very team-based. But there’s a healthy 1v1 community out there as well, and at any rate it makes the betting considerably simpler. You challenge someone, put up an agreed amount into escrow (anywhere from $1 to $100,000) and at the end the total is given over to the winner, minus the 10% fee you knew had to be in there somewhere. These being games of skill (and thus impervious to the legal restrictions on games of chance), some matches may be close or contested; a record of the events of each game is emailed to each player, however, and I can only assume that when things get hairy, a BringIt “ref” will be brought in to make the call.

Although it will add yet another facet to modern net-dwellers’ already too-fragmented online presences, BringIt is hoping to bring in metadata from other sources: your gamercard and Live! profile, for instance. Although there will be a shaky period as the information is tapped to make skill stratifications among the users, the sheer amount of data generated by the online gaming community — wins, losses, time played, maps played, heads shot, etc — should guarantee some degree of accuracy, assuming BringIt’s tools for analysis are up to the task.

At this time, BringIt supports XBOX 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii.

The Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board announced the release of a joint final rule to implement the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. The Act prohibits gambling businesses from knowingly accepting payments in connection with unlawful Internet gambling, including payments made through credit cards, electronic funds transfers, and checks.

The Board and the Treasury are required by the Act to develop a joint rule in consultation with the Department of Justice. The final rule requires U.S. financial firms that participate in designated payment systems to establish and implement policies and procedures that are reasonably designed to prevent payments to gambling businesses in connection with unlawful Internet gambling. The rule provides non-exclusive examples of such policies and procedures and sets out the regulatory enforcement framework. For purposes of the rule, unlawful Internet gambling generally would cover the making of a bet or wager that involves use of the Internet and that is unlawful under any applicable federal or state law in the jurisdiction where the bet or wager is initiated, received, or otherwise made.

Compliance with the rule is required by December 1, 2009. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., has said he will seek to overturn the law, pointing out that even the most ardent fans of the regulations have said they will be difficult to interpret and enforce.

Part of the problem is to define “unlawful Internet gambling.” For instance, the National Football League’s “Fantasy Football” is exempted from the legislation, because the NFL claims the game is skill-based and not a game of chance and, thus, not gambling.

Opponents of the legislation complained earlier this week before the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Bank issued new regulations describing the legislation. The opponents argued that a former NFL lobbyist was working in the White House and represented a conflict of interest. A White House spokesperson said the lobbyist, William Wichterman, was in compliance with ethics rules.

The legislation, HR 4411, was originally sponsored by Republican Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, and it had the strong and influential backing of then-Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn. After 30 years in the House, Leach was narrowly defeated in the 2006 election. This summer Leach threw his support to Barack Obama to the consternation of many Republicans, and this week Obama named Leach and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as his representatives to an international economic summit in Washington.

Since all games GameDuell offers are skill based games, it is not considered gambling and, therefore, the offer is legal in most of the United States. While our coverage of skill gaming has been fairly sporadic, and we hope to improve it, generally speaking, internet gaming is one of the most popular and fastest growing sectors of the online market. It is already worth more than 4 billion US dollars and expected to hit 8 billion by the end of 2011 according to Watershed Publishing LLC and Media Buyer Planner LLC.

We really can’t wait for someone to turn around and use this as proof of while online gambling is bad for the world:

The high alert is aimed at big-time gamblers and the tennis pros who they are increasingly trying – sometimes successfully – to corrupt.

Coincident with opening day for the grass-court extravaganza, there are plans to announce strict new anti-corruption rules, involving fines and suspensions. Red flags have been raised repeatedly in recent years, with a resulting investigation revealing that at least 45 matches, including several at Wimbledon, are regarded as highly suspicious.

Significantly, it was British bookmakers who raised the alarm, as they noticed spikes in money bet for certain otherwise unexceptional matches. Tennis in general has begun to attract enormous betting interest, ranking behind only soccer and racing in the U.K. One online book alone says it took more than $1 billion (Canadian) in Wimbledon bets last year.

Such vasts sums are bound to attract sophisticated criminal interest. Whether such interests have been there all along or not is open to question, but fixing has been a problem in all of sports dating back to the very beginning.

Allegations of “tanking” are as old as tennis and include an ongoing probe into a match last year involving world No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko. What’s new is the suggestion that the practice is more insidious than anyone had suspected, aided by rocketing sums being bet worldwide on Internet gambling sites.

Why would one match attract 10 or 100 or 1,000 times more betting action than another? Something’s fishy and the bookies know it.

A low- or middle-ranked player can take a payment from gamblers that will guarantee a far richer payday than if he or she were to win a round or two. In tennis, of all sports, it’s easy to throw a match through moments of indifferent play or faked illness or injury.

Nine-time Wimbledon singles champ Martina Navratilova tells The Times of London: “The key is to not start doing it. Apparently once you do one match, then they’ve got you. The syndicate have got you. You are on the hook because now they have got proof that you have done it once.”

Investigators, headed by a pair of former Scotland Yard detectives, found that many top players said they “knew of” other players who had been approached to throw matches. The sport’s culture, apparently, has led competitors to keep quiet, not rock the boat.

Authorities appear determined to chase down any and all rumours, scare off the organized gamblers and scare straight the players.

“The joy of competitive sport for the spectator depends on the belief that the competitors are trying to win,” says The Independent, in an editorial. “If that belief is undermined by the suspicion that matches are being fixed, the life-enhancing quality of sport is sullied. …

“Part of Wimbledon’s charm is the assumption of fair play – not all sports have succeeded in preserving spectators’ confidence in good sportsmanship in the face of big money. Even if sportsmanship contains an element of myth, it is a good myth to have. It does no harm, therefore, to believe that tennis is a more courtly business than other professional sports.”
There is only one other popular online poker website that is legal for US residents, DuplicatePoker, which slightly alters the rules to make it a more a game of skill, which is than permitted by US law.

PurePlay was planned out and started well in advance of the UIGEA laws, says CEO Jason Kellerman. The trick to PurePlay is that it works off a subscription model, with users paying set monthly fees to play, but gaining the potential to win large sums if they’re good enough to win tournaments.

Of that sizable pool of gamers, PurePlay has captured about a million people. It doesn’t disclose how many are paying, but some extrapolation is possible. The company says it pays out over $125,000 each month in prizes. Subscriptions are $20 a month, so if PurePlay gives back 25 percent of its subscription fees, it has around 25,000 paying subscribers; if it gives back 50 percent, then only 12,500 subscribers, and so forth.

In a recent article, The New York Times looked at the affect of the indoor smoking ban on bingo games across the US.

Charlie Lindstrom, who runs the bingo nights at an American Legion post in Fergus Falls, Minn., said… on a good night, bingo at the post used to attract 50 to 75 players. Nowadays it is more like 30 or 40…

Mr. Lindstrom is not alone. Managers of charity bingo games in California, New Jersey, New York and Washington State also say their states’ smoking bans have forced cutbacks in their budgets.

Clearly, people who enjoy bingo, also enjoy having a smoke and now that they are unable to do so in bingo halls, what’s left for them? Unfortunately, for the US citizens, bingo is considered a game of chance and is therefore prohibited under the UIGEA. Fortunately for the non-US parts of the world, because bingo is game that can be played online there are a number of online bingo halls where bingo players can play from the comfort of their houses and smoke if they’d like.

One of the best online bingo halls is ran by Jackpot City. It was established in September 1998 and is fully licensed by the Government of Gibraltar and is regulated to both UK and EU standards. To further ensure player safety JackpotCity.com has been awarded the prestigious eCOGRA Seal of Approval and abides by the standards set down in the eCOGRA code of conduct. Jackpot City offer both a download option and an instant play no-download option to all players.
