Unintentended Consequences: Smoking and Bingo

April 26th, 2008 by admin

In a recent article, The New York Times looked at the affect of the indoor smoking ban on bingo games across the US.

Charlie Lindstrom, who runs the bingo nights at an American Legion post in Fergus Falls, Minn., said… on a good night, bingo at the post used to attract 50 to 75 players. Nowadays it is more like 30 or 40…

Mr. Lindstrom is not alone. Managers of charity bingo games in California, New Jersey, New York and Washington State also say their states’ smoking bans have forced cutbacks in their budgets.

Clearly, people who enjoy bingo, also enjoy having a smoke and now that they are unable to do so in bingo halls, what’s left for them? Unfortunately, for the US citizens, bingo is considered a game of chance and is therefore prohibited under the UIGEA. Fortunately for the non-US parts of the world, because bingo is game that can be played online there are a number of online bingo halls where bingo players can play from the comfort of their houses and smoke if they’d like.

One of the best online bingo halls is ran by Jackpot City. It was established in September 1998 and is fully licensed by the Government of Gibraltar and is regulated to both UK and EU standards. To further ensure player safety JackpotCity.com has been awarded the prestigious eCOGRA Seal of Approval and abides by the standards set down in the eCOGRA code of conduct. Jackpot City offer both a download option and an instant play no-download option to all players.

I have written 2 or 3 articles about this same subject covering both the UK and the US. Smoking bans are killinf land based bingo but are great for online bingo operators.
